Wildlife Holidays in the Forest of Dean

The Forest of Dean is a haven for animals, both large and small. Take a look at some of the fascinating creatures that have chosen this ancient forest as their home, and if you're lucky, you can spot here too!

The elusive Roe & Muncja Deer are known to hide within bracken, cautiously peering out from behind fallen branches, checking if the coast is clear. You might also catch a glimpse of smaller mammals, such as Weasels, Voles, and Dormice, scuttering through the undergrowth. Whilst Wild Boar can be heard from afar, snuffling, grunting and squealing.

Many bird species can also be spotted nesting or circling the skies. The Nuthatch is the only bird species that can walk down trees, making them a very interesting watch, especially if you're lucky enough to see one walking upside down! Listen out for the distinctive sound of the Woodcock in the Winter, with its call often described similar to that of a frog! Or the spectacular squawk of the Buzzard, before it swoops down after its prey.

During the evenings, and sometimes late afternoon, you might witness the graceful presence of an Owl. Or even a colony of Bats, as they nest in the high treetops and awaken at dusk.

Whilst not native to the UK, many spottings of Terrapins have been reported in and around the River Wye and surrounding areas. Keep your eyes peeled for Britain's only venomous snake, the Adder, who relishes the natural habitat the Forest of Dean has to offer. Both Lizards and Newts crawl and scutter, seeking out the best spot to sun themselves or hunting their next meal.

If you want to experience some of the best wildlife that the UK has to offer, then look no further.
