When visiting many of the fantastic towns and villages along the River Wye such as Symonds Yat and Ross-on-Wye, you may want to stop and eat at a restaurant or pub where the food is as good as the magnificent surroundings.
We’ve put together a list of these for you to check out at various points along the River Wye. Some are right on the riverbank and others are a short walk or drive away, but they will all make your holiday more memorable with a mix of great food and stunning scenery.

Although they may be off the beaten track, these restaurants have a UK-wide reputation for great food are within a short drive of our houses, making them well worth a visit if you’re a fan of top-rated chef’s with a signature style.
The Whitebrook, Monmouth
Regarded as one of the best restaurants in the UK, The Whitebrook offers top quality food from locally sourced ingredients. The unique aspect of each meal is that they feature something found in the surrounding countryside and the restaurant even offers the opportunity for you to join the Chef, Chris Harrod, and forage for your own ingredients, to be served to you as part of your meal.

The Walnut Tree, Abergavenny
With a long history of great food, The Walnut Tree Inn offers an ever changing seasonal menu and will even cater to personal taste by prior arrangement. Run by Shaun Hill he has been at the forefront of British Cuisine since the Eighties with successive Michelin Star restaurants, each representing his personal philosophy of cooking.

Bar/Restaurants
One of the most common sights along the River Wye are the old coaching inns and village pubs that have served travellers and tourists for centuries. In fact, some of our houses [link] have been converted from these types of welcoming buildings and is part of the charm of staying in them.
Those listed below continue this great tradition and are a good stopping point if you’re exploring the area or are a destination in themselves because of their fantastic locations offering great views of the Wye Valley.
As well as serving food the bars generally tend to serve many of the locally produced Ales, Ciders and Perries to give you a taste of this great countryside.
The Saracens Head, Symonds Yat
Dating back to the 16th century, The Saracens Head has long been a popular inn with travellers and sightseers as it is situated in the heart of Symonds Yat, right on the banks of the River Wye. With great access to famous Yat Rock viewpoint and with river cruises and and a hand-pulled ferry, it offers many things to do after you’ve stopped for something to eat.

Wilton Court Hotel, Ross-On-Wye
This 16th Century Elizabethan house located on the riverbank just outside Ross-on-Wye has been transformed into an award-winning restaurant. WIth fantastic views and great food this would make a special night out.

Inn-on-the-Wye, Goodrich
The Inn-on-the-Wye is a popular stop for walkers from Symonds Yat and those visiting the nearby Goodrich Castle. The outdoor seating offers a great view over the River Wye and surrounding countryside.

Ye Old Ferrie Inn, Symonds Yat
One of the oldest pubs in in Symonds Yat, Ye Old Ferrie Inn is right on the banks of the River Wye. Offering another crossing point over the river via a hand pulled ferry it is another destination for intrepid walkers looking for a meal or those who just want to enjoy the view.

The Hostelrie, Goodrich
Ideally located for visiting Goodrich Castle, The Hostelrie is also only a few miles from Ross-on-Wye, Symonds Yat and Monmouth. This 19th Century Gothic building is far more welcoming than it might suggest with a home-cooked style menu and a bar stock with beverages from local micro-breweries as well as more widely recognised ales.

Old Court Hotel, Symonds Yat
This grand 16th Century coaching inn near Symonds Yat is set in its own grounds and is known for its Tudor Dining Room restaurant. Additionally, it has a cosy lounge, two bars and a conservatory with a large patio area and manicured gardens making it perfect for a Summer’s day stop-off.

The Bell, Skenfrith
On the banks of the River Monnow sits this former 17th century coaching inn. A regular award winning restaurant offers locally sourced food and seasonal menus. Once of Monmouth, this “well-kept secret” has now moved to Whitchurch, near Symonds Yat and is as popular as ever. As well as their regular cafe items they offer a ‘Posh Afternoon Tea’ and evening ‘Candlelit Dinners’.
