Friday afternoon has a lot to answer for.

For years we've automatically associated going away with Friday night: finish work, pack the car, join everybody else on the road and arrive wondering why a relaxing weekend has begun with quite so much traffic.

But when a group has some flexibility, midweek group breaks in the Wye Valley deserve serious consideration.

The pace feels different

The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean are wonderful places to explore at any time, but midweek can give a group more space to enjoy them.

You can wander around towns, stop for lunch, explore the countryside and visit local attractions without feeling that everybody else had precisely the same idea that morning.

For groups who want to walk, explore heritage, discover gardens or simply spend a few days somewhere beautiful, that more relaxed pace can be part of the pleasure.

It works particularly well for groups with flexibility

Not every reunion needs to fit between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

Retired friends, extended families, clubs, interest groups and groups able to arrange a few days away outside the traditional weekend can turn an ordinary Tuesday into the beginning of an adventure.

And there's something rather lovely about sitting over a long lunch on Wednesday knowing that, back home, it's a perfectly normal working day.

A midweek stay isn't about cramming a weekend itinerary into different days.

It's about slowing everything down.

Have breakfast before deciding where to go. Explore the Wye Valley. Take a forest walk. Visit a historic town. Come back early and spend the evening together.

And if one day the entire group decides that the big plan is not leaving the house at all?
