Canoeing and Paddleboarding on the River Wye – The Ultimate Wye Valley Adventure
Why explore the Wye by water?
The River Wye has long been considered one of Britain's finest rivers for paddlesports. Stretching for over 100 miles, it winds through peaceful countryside, ancient woodland, charming market towns and the spectacular scenery of the Wye Valley. Many sections are wonderfully gentle, making them ideal for first-time paddlers, while places like Symonds Yat offer a little more excitement for those wanting to tackle faster-moving water.
Unlike many rivers, most organised trips travel downstream. This means your chosen hire company transports you to the starting point while your car waits at the finish, making the whole experience surprisingly easy.

Canoe, kayak or paddleboard?
One of the great things about the Wye is that there are options for every type of adventurer.
Canoeing
Canadian canoes remain the classic choice for families and groups. They're stable, spacious and ideal if you want to pack a picnic, waterproof bags and perhaps even bring the dog along on certain routes.
Kayaking
Kayaks are perfect if you'd like a slightly more active paddle. They're easy to control and allow you to cover longer distances comfortably.
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
SUP has become hugely popular over recent years, and once you've tried it, it's easy to understand why. Standing above the water gives you fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, while the slower pace makes it perfect for wildlife spotting. Beginners can enjoy calm stretches of the river before progressing to longer journeys or guided adventures.

Perfect for families
You don't need to be an experienced paddler to enjoy the River Wye.
Many local operators welcome families with children from around four years old when accompanied by confident adults. Half-day trips are particularly popular, giving youngsters plenty of time to paddle, stop for snacks and skim stones on the riverbank without becoming too tired.
Children often spend as much time looking for wildlife as they do paddling!
Keep your eyes open for:
- Kingfishers
- Herons
- Swans
- Otters
- Buzzards circling overhead
- Peregrine falcons near Symonds Yat
- Deer along the wooded banks
If you're very lucky, you may even glimpse a wild boar in the surrounding Forest of Dean.

Some of the best paddling routes
There are plenty of fantastic routes depending on how much time you have.
Family-friendly adventures
The eight-mile stretch from Kerne Bridge towards Symonds Yat is one of the most popular family routes. It combines beautiful scenery with gentle paddling and plenty of opportunities for riverside picnics.
A relaxing day on the water
For a leisurely full-day paddle, many visitors choose routes around Glasbury, Hay-on-Wye and Whitney-on-Wye, enjoying riverside cafés and country pubs along the way.
Multi-day expeditions
If you're staying for several nights at one of our larger holiday houses, why not tackle part of the famous River Wye journey?
Multi-day canoe trips allow you to paddle through Herefordshire, Ross-on-Wye and onwards towards Symonds Yat, stopping overnight in campsites or riverside accommodation. It's an unforgettable way to experience one of Britain's most beautiful rivers.

Wildlife everywhere you look
One of the greatest pleasures of paddling is slowing down enough to notice your surroundings.
Unlike walking or cycling, being on the water allows wildlife to carry on naturally around you.
You may find yourself floating beneath ancient oak trees, passing colourful wildflowers along the riverbank or listening to birdsong echoing through the valley. Every bend seems to reveal another postcard-worthy view.
Bring binoculars if you have them—you'll be amazed what you spot.
Everything is taken care of
If you've never paddled before, don't worry.
The local canoe centres provide:
- Canoes, kayaks or paddleboards
- Buoyancy aids
- Paddles
- Waterproof storage barrels
- Safety briefings
- Transport to your launch point
- Route advice
Some companies also offer guided wildlife tours, beginner lessons, SUP coaching and even canoe camping experiences for those wanting something a little different.
What should you bring?
Preparation is simple.
We'd recommend:
- Old trainers or water shoes
- Comfortable clothing suitable for getting splashed
- Sun cream
- Hat
- Plenty of drinking water
- Picnic or snacks
- Waterproof phone case
- Change of clothes for afterwards
Even on warm summer days, it's worth packing a lightweight waterproof jacket just in case the British weather decides to join your adventure!
