The Joy of Getting Everyone Together in One Big House (We Finally Did It… and Now We’re Ruined for Normal Weekends)

Life, work, kids, calendars — you know how it goes.

Until Emma — now officially known as Head of Logistics — got fed up and just sorted it.

No group debate. No endless messages.

Just:
“I’ve booked a big house in the Wye Valley with Big House Holiday Lets. You’re all coming. Deposits by Friday.”

And somehow… that was exactly what we needed.

The Bit That Usually Stops It Happening

We’d actually tried before.

But trying to organise 12+ people is like herding cats. Everyone’s got different dates, budgets, opinions.

Emma said the only reason this worked is because she didn’t overcomplicate it — she just rang Big House Holiday Lets, told them roughly what we needed (lots of bedrooms, big social space, somewhere nice to walk), and they basically did the rest.

She said they were ridiculously easy to deal with — no pressure, just helpful suggestions and a few options that actually suited a mixed group.

We ended up booking Brookside near Whitchurch… and honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect - even a heated pool!!!

Arrival Day (aka Slight Chaos, Then Magic)

There were about 14 of us in the end.

Couples, kids, Dave (who said he’d “just pop in” and stayed all weekend), and someone who turned up with enough snacks to feed a small village

First 10 minutes — chaos.

Bags everywhere. Room negotiations. Someone asking where the kettle is like it’s a crisis.

Then drinks appeared.

And within half an hour, it just… clicked.

That’s the beauty of a relaxed group weekend break in a large countryside house — it gives you time.

The House Did All the Hard Work

This is the bit no one really tells you.

Once you’re in the right place, you don’t actually need a plan.

Brookside had this huge kitchen and dining space, loads of room to spread out, and enough little corners that people could disappear without actually disappearing.

At one point I realised I hadn’t seen half the group for ages — some were outside, a few had wandered off exploring, kids had claimed territory upstairs — and it didn’t matter.

Everyone was just… happy.

The Little Moments (The Ones That Stay With You)

It wasn’t the big “activities” that made it.

It was the bits you’d never think to plan.

  • Sarah and Jen chatting over coffee at 7am

  • Mike attempting breakfast for everyone and somehow pulling it off

  • A long walk down towards the river that turned into a full afternoon

  • Dave getting distracted by a couple of dogs (local pugs I think) and vanishing for 20 minutes

And the evenings…

No taxis. No noise. No time limits.

Just everyone together, talking rubbish, laughing too much, and staying up later than intended.

Food Became the Event

We thought feeding that many people would be a nightmare.

It wasn’t.

It turned into this relaxed, slightly chaotic rotation.

Emma had a rough plan (of course she did).
Tom took charge of the BBQ like he was on a cooking show.
Someone made a ridiculous sharing board that basically became dinner.

And because we were all in one place, it just flowed.

No rushing. No booking slots. No splitting bills.

Just food when we were ready, eaten slowly, properly.

No One Did the Same Thing (And That Was the Best Bit)

Saturday summed it up perfectly.

A few of us went out for a walk around Symonds Yat.
Some stayed back with coffee.
Kids disappeared (again, assumed fine).
Someone got in the hot tub before midday and fully committed to it.

Normally, you’d feel like everyone had to stick together.

Here, you didn’t.

And somehow, that made the time together even better and that’s the joy of a big holiday house in the Wye Valley for friends and family getaways — everyone finds their own rhythm.

The Bit That Hits You

There’s always a moment.

Usually late evening, when things have slowed down a bit.

You look around and think:

This is what we meant all those times we said we’d do something.

Not a rushed catch-up.

This.

Time. Space. No pressure.

And honestly, having a place like this — and Big House Holiday Lets making it easy to organise — is what makes it actually happen.

The Morning After

Sunday was slow.

Coffee. Hoodies. That slightly reluctant feeling about packing up.

Someone — I think it was Jen — said, “We should do this every year.”

And for once, no one brushed it off.

Because now we knew it worked.

Already Planning the Next One

On the drive home, the group chat started again.

But this time it wasn’t “we should…”

It was:

“Same place next year?”
“Or try Holly Tree House?”
“Or that one with the views — what was it, Wye Rapids House?”

And Emma, obviously, has already started looking.

So If You’re Still Talking About It…

Stop talking.

Just book it.

Honestly, having Big House Holiday Lets to help you find the right place takes away most of the stress before you’ve even started.

Pick a date. Get something in the diary. Let people figure the rest out.

Because once you’re all there — in one big house, with nowhere else to be —

You’ll wonder why it took you so long.
