“Winter is Coming” to the Forest of Dean

For those of you not smitten by GOT ( oh do you have a mega binge watch in store….) the Iron Throne is the seat which the heads of the warring families seek to occupy and by the end of Series Eight, about to be released, you’ll find out who gets it. HBO who…

HBO who make the programme have hidden 6 replica Thrones in locations all over the world and the first to be found is at Puzzlewood in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Me, I’d have had that Ned Stark and his lovely wife take up occupation at the end of Series One which is why I run a large group holiday rental agency and George RR Martin is one of the world’s most successful authors. Oh well, each to their own.

Puzzlewood is the perfect setting for the Throne, being the location for other film triumphs including Star Wars, Merlin, and most recently King Arthur. As well as being fun to wonder about you can see animals grazing in their paddocks including goats, donkeys, Shetland ponies, cattle, sheep, hens and ducks. The indoor and outdoor mazes add to the sense of adventure with secret doors, hidden animal pictures and endless twists and turns. There’s a lovely café where you can sip your latte while contemplating the horrific ends endured by many of the GOT cast. Ever wondered how it might be to end your days impaled by a crossbow bolt fired by your own son while taking your ease? Ask Charles Dance, he knows.

Peppered with protruding roots, meandering pathways and dramatic natural landscape, there is plenty of magic to be found in this atmospheric 14 acre ancient woodland. It’s easily accessed from all of Big House Holiday Let’shouses and has loads of parking. Winter is Coming!
