Sex Education in the Wye Valley

If you’re staying at Hollytree House in Symonds Yat cast your eyes over the river above the Saracens Head Inn and you’ll see the chalet style home sat in the wood above it (known locally as the Red House).

It’s long been famous around here for its unusual appearance but it’s about to get a whole lot more so now it figures in the smash hit  Netflix series Sex Education. Released in January 2019, it was filmed in 2018 in the Wye Valley across Monmouthshire in Wales, and Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in England.

Gillian Anderson, ex of  X Files,  plays a sex-therapist who lives with her son, Otis, played by Asa Butterfield, in a beautiful house in Symonds Yat, Herefordshire and another character lives at a local caravan park near Ross-on-Wye.

Tintern and Llandogo in Monmouthshire feature heavily too and there are many scenes of the characters walking and cycling along the River Wye and through the woods nearby.

Brockweir Bridge across the River Wye features in some scenes, as well as the Wireworks Bridge at Tintern which they cross on their way to school. Local businesses feature too including Browns Village Stores in Llandogo.

Sex Education has proved to be one of Netflix’s most popular shows, and they’re about to start filming series 2, to the huge releief of their millions of fans.  With more than 44 million viewers from across the world so far it’s inevitable that our stunning Wye Valley will attract a whole new set of visitors eager to see the places their heros and heroines live and love.

If you want to get a little closer to the action you can walk to the Ferry in the picture from Hollytree House in 5 minutes and 2 minutes later you can be over at the Saracens Head drinking in the atmosphere and maybe a drop of HPA to calm your beating heart.. Here’s to the continuing entanglements of Otis, Maeve and Eric and many more series to follow.
