🌲 Area Blog: Forest of Dean – Why Everyone’s Going, and Why You’ll Love It

Thinking about a UK getaway for up to 35 of you that’s actually relaxing, wildly beautiful, and not packed with day-trippers every five minutes? Forest of Dean might be the most underrated spot in the country.

1. Puzzlewood: Nature’s Film Set

A twisting, mossy, ancient woodland that inspired Tolkien’s Middle Earth and featured in Star Wars and Doctor Who. Basically, Instagram gold.

2. Symonds Yat Rock: Jaw-Dropping Views

Climb to the viewpoint and spot peregrine falcons (or just take in the Wye Valley in all its “wow” glory). One of the best picnic spots in the country.

3. River Wye Kayaking

Go full Huckleberry Finn with a paddle downstream — loads of family-friendly routes and hire centres nearby. Pub stops optional but encouraged.

4. Dean Heritage Centre & Clearwell Caves

From industrial heritage to iron-age caverns, the area has history tucked under every tree root. Plus, plenty for kids to run riot with.

5. Village Pubs & Farm Shops

Lydbrook is surrounded by good, honest food and drink. Whether it’s fresh forest venison, local cider, or a hot pie after a hike — you’ll eat well here.

The perfect spot in Lydbrook is the wonderful former pub, The Anchor. Already packed for this year and well into next, get booking for your get together in 2026...
