Forest House, nestled on Cinder Hill in Coleford, is a charming Grade II listed building with a rich history dating back to around 1795. Constructed with impressively thick two-foot walls, the house was soon expanded with a sideways extension that doubled its size. In the 19th century, it was known as Tump House and was considered a 'more substantial house,' typically occupied by well-to-do individuals.
One of its most notable residents was David Mushet, an eminent iron and steel metallurgist. Mushet took a lease on the house in 1810 when he moved from Derbyshire to manage the Whitecliff Furnace. Although his management there was brief, he continued to reside at Forest House until 1844. After David's departure, his son, Robert Forester Mushet, moved in. Robert was born at Tump House in 1811 and later became a renowned steelmaker, known for his significant contributions to the iron and steel industry. Following David's death in 1847, a dispute over the house's lease led Robert to relocate.
In the early 20th century, the house was occupied by B.H. Taylor JP and his sister, Emily. Emily is believed to have lived there until her passing in the 1930s. Subsequently, Forest House transitioned into a guesthouse, then a 4 star hotel.. Its historical significance and architectural charm make it a notable landmark in Coleford, reflecting the town's rich industrial heritage.
Today, Forest House operates as a large Airbnb, offering families and friends a chance to experience a piece of Coleford's history first hand. Its proximity to the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley makes it an ideal base for exploring the area's natural beauty and historical sites.
For those interested in the Mushet family's contributions to metallurgy, a blue plaque commemorating David Mushet can be found in the area, highlighting his pioneering work in the iron and steel industry.
