Why the Best Part of a Group Holiday Isn't What You Think

Where shall we go?

What attractions are nearby?

Is there enough to keep everyone entertained?

They're all good questions, but after years of welcoming families and friends to large holiday houses across the Wye Valley, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, we've noticed something.

The moments people remember most rarely happen at tourist attractions.

Instead, they're the unexpected little moments that happen back at the house.

It Starts Before You Even Arrive

The group chat has already been busy for weeks.

Who's bringing dessert?

Can someone remember the board games?

What time is everyone arriving?

And then comes the annual debate...

Who gets the biggest bedroom?

Every family seems to have one person who's somehow an expert at claiming the ensuite before anyone else has even unpacked!

Thankfully, when you're staying in one of our spacious holiday homes, there are plenty of comfortable bedrooms to choose from. With houses sleeping anywhere from 12 to 50 guests, there's room for everyone to settle in without feeling on top of one another.

The First Evening

There's something special about that first evening together.

Cars pull onto the driveway one after another.

Suitcases appear.

Children disappear within minutes to explore.

The kettle goes on.

Someone opens a bottle of wine.

Before long, everyone is gathered around the kitchen island or dining table catching up on everything that's happened since you last met.

No one's looking at the clock.

There's nowhere else to be.

Slow Mornings Matter

Perhaps the most underrated part of a group holiday is the morning after everyone arrives.

Unlike hotels, nobody disappears behind separate bedroom doors or heads off to different breakfast times.

The house wakes up gradually.

The early risers are already enjoying coffee in the garden.

Someone is frying bacon.

Someone else is still in their pyjamas searching for the tea bags.

Children are planning the day's adventures while grandparents enjoy a quiet moment with a newspaper.

These relaxed mornings often become everyone's favourite memory.

Space Makes All the Difference

One of the biggest advantages of booking a large holiday house is having enough room for everyone.

There are cosy lounges for chatting.

Games rooms where teenagers happily vanish for hours.

Large dining tables that bring everyone together at mealtimes.

Gardens where children can run around while adults relax with a drink.

And if someone simply wants half an hour with a good book, there's usually a quiet corner waiting for them too.

It's the balance between spending time together and having your own space that makes these holidays so enjoyable.

Meals Become Events

Back at home, dinner is often something squeezed in between work, school and everyday life.

On holiday it's different.

Breakfast stretches into brunch.

Lunch might be a picnic by the river.

Evening meals become occasions.

Some groups cook together, while others bring in a local caterer for a special celebration.

There's plenty of laughter, someone inevitably burns the garlic bread, and no meal ever seems to finish on time.

That's exactly how it should be.

Every Generation Finds Their Place

Large family holidays are one of the few occasions where three or even four generations spend quality time together.

Grandparents enjoy uninterrupted time with grandchildren.

Parents finally get chance to relax while someone else entertains the little ones.

Teenagers discover that card games can actually be quite competitive.

Family stories get retold.

Old photographs appear.

Traditions continue.

It's these shared experiences that make every gathering unique.

Adventure Is Just Outside the Door

Of course, exploring the local area is still part of the fun.

The Wye Valley offers riverside walks, canoeing, paddleboarding, scenic viewpoints, market towns, woodland trails, independent cafés and welcoming country pubs.

Whether you fancy a gentle stroll beside the River Wye or a full day exploring castles, forests and picturesque villages, there's something for every age and every pace.

The best part?

At the end of the day everyone returns to the same welcoming house to compare stories over dinner.

Celebrating Together

Many of our guests are celebrating something special.

A milestone birthday.

A wedding anniversary.

A retirement.

A family reunion.

Or simply the fact that everyone has finally managed to find the same free weekend.

The house becomes the backdrop for all those celebrations without anyone feeling rushed.

There's time to decorate.

Time to laugh.

Time to simply enjoy being together.

The Memories You Didn't Plan

It's funny how holidays work.

The carefully planned itinerary often isn't what people talk about afterwards.

Instead it's...

The impromptu barbecue.

The late-night conversations.

The children inventing games in the garden.

The sunrise coffee.

The shared breakfast.

The laughter around the dining table.

The spectacular sunset everyone almost missed.

Those are the moments that stay with us.
