Lose Yourself (Literally) at Elton Giant Mazes – A Proper Day Out from Your Big House Holiday Let
So, what is Elton Giant Mazes?
Imagine several acres of field turned into a living, twisting, green puzzle – we’re talking maize mazes in summer (proper towering corn walls), plus hedge and woodland mazes the rest of the year. It’s the kind of place where Google Maps won’t help you, and your sense of direction gets properly tested. You’ll laugh. You’ll argue about which way to go. You’ll probably end up back where you started once or twice. It’s great.
The main maze changes design every year, which is impressive given the sheer scale of the thing. Think crop-art-meets-adventure-park. One year it might be a giant dragon, another year it’s a knight, or a steam train – always something fab and photo-worthy from above (though on the ground, you’ll mostly just see a lot of green and the occasional fellow wanderer who looks just as lost as you).
It's not just a maze, either
If you’ve got younger ones in tow (or adults who think they’re big kids), Elton’s got plenty of space to run, climb and play. There’s a brilliant woodland play area, mini games hidden within the mazes, and often seasonal activities – think treasure hunts, stamp-collecting challenges and even pumpkins if you visit around Halloween.
There’s also a smaller mini-maze and quiz trail for anyone who gets twitchy about being stuck in the big one too long. Not everyone fancies full-blown maze madness, and that’s okay – Elton caters to all levels of navigational bravery.
Refuel like a maze master
Walking in circles builds an appetite, and Elton has you covered. There’s a rustic café on site offering the good stuff: proper coffee, cakes, pasties, sausage rolls – no need to pack a picnic unless you’re feeling especially organised. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and a few shady spots too (especially useful if it’s a scorcher).
They’re also big on local produce and family vibes, which means you’ll feel that lovely countryside welcome that’s hard to fake. It’s refreshingly down-to-earth – no big corporate vibes here.
Great for groups, and nobody gets left behind (probably)
Staying in one of our big houses with a whole gang of mates or a family crew? Elton is the perfect daytime activity that gets everyone involved. The mazes are big enough to spread out a bit, but compact enough to not lose someone forever. (Though we do recommend a buddy system – just in case Granny ends up in a dead end talking to a scarecrow.)
Group selfies mid-maze are practically a rite of passage, and you’ll come away with a few stories, a bit of dirt on your shoes, and maybe even a new appreciation for orienteering. It’s wholesome chaos – in the best way.
When to go, what to know
-
Summer is the prime season, with the giant maize maze in full swing from mid-July through to early September.
-
Autumn sees the Halloween Maze Nights – torches, spooky vibes and evening opening hours.
-
Spring and early summer tend to focus on the hedge maze, play areas and seasonal trails.
-
Open weekends and school holidays – always check their website or socials before you go.
Prices are super reasonable, and booking online usually saves you a bit of cash. Wear comfy shoes, bring water, and prepare for a bit of competition (“No, I found the exit first!”).
Back to your Big House base
After all that excitement, heading back to your Big House Holiday Let feels like coming home – hot showers, massive sofas, maybe a BBQ in the garden or a glass of something chilled while the kids crash out early (or not, if they’re still high on maze energy).
So, if you’re looking for a day out that gets everyone outdoors, laughing, and just the right amount of lost – Elton Giant Mazes is the one. Just don’t blame us if someone insists on doing it again the next day…
