The Weekend That Feels Like a Proper Break
But every now and again, you get one of those weekends.
The kind where you come home wondering how you managed to fit so much into just a couple of days. A weekend filled with long breakfasts, countryside walks, late-night conversations and absolutely no pressure to be anywhere at a particular time.
That’s the magic of escaping to a big holiday house with your favourite people.
Arrive, Unpack and Switch Off
There’s something wonderfully satisfying about closing the front door of a big country house behind you on Friday afternoon and knowing that, for the next few days, it’s yours.
Bags disappear into bedrooms. Someone puts the kettle on. Someone else opens the first bottle of something cold. Children investigate every room and adults immediately start deciding where everyone is going to sit later.
And suddenly, normal life feels quite a long way away.
There’s no hotel reception to navigate, no scattering everyone across different floors and no need to meet in the lobby at 7.15pm because someone has booked a table for 7.30pm.
You simply arrive.
And relax.

Saturday Morning Without an Alarm
One of the great pleasures of a weekend away is waking up and realising there is nowhere you actually have to be.
Especially when you're staying somewhere beautiful.
Big holiday houses are made for wonderfully slow mornings. People appear in the kitchen at different times. Coffee is brewed. Toast pops up. Someone starts cooking bacon and suddenly everybody who claimed they weren't hungry is hovering nearby.
Breakfast might last an hour.
Possibly two.
Nobody is clearing your table because they need it for the next sitting and nobody is checking whether you've finished.
You can sit there planning the day — or deciding not to plan it at all.

Step Outside and Explore
Of course, if you do fancy an adventure, the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean make it very easy.
You could pull on your walking boots and head out into the countryside, wander beside the River Wye or spend a few hours exploring one of the area's lovely towns and villages.
Some groups might fancy canoeing, cycling or something a little more energetic.
Others may prefer a gentle walk followed by a very long pub lunch.
Both are perfectly respectable holiday activities.
And that's the beauty of a big group weekend. You don't all have to do the same thing.
One group can head off for an adventure while another explores the shops. Someone can stay behind with a book and a cup of coffee. Later, everyone meets back at the house with stories from their day.
Relax knowing the kids are safely playing
The House Becomes Part of the Holiday
When you're away for only a few days, you don't want to spend half the weekend travelling from one place to another.
Which is why having a house where you actually want to spend time makes such a difference.
A big kitchen becomes the gathering place.
The garden becomes somewhere for afternoon drinks.
Games rooms become unexpectedly competitive.
Hot tubs encourage conversations that continue long after everyone intended to get out.
And big dining tables bring everyone together for meals that seem to last forever.
Instead of the accommodation simply being somewhere you sleep between activities, it becomes part of the experience.
Sometimes, it's the best part.

Saturday Night, Your Way
This is when a large holiday house really comes into its own.
Saturday night doesn't need to involve finding a restaurant capable of squeezing 20 people around several tables.
You could cook together, arrange catering, order something delicious or nominate the enthusiastic chef in the family who has been telling everyone for years that their curry is better than the local takeaway.
Then settle in.
Music on.
Glasses filled.
Children playing.
Friends talking.
No taxis to organise. No last orders. No worrying about who is driving.
And when someone decides at midnight that it's an excellent time to tell the same story they've told at every gathering since 2007, nobody needs to rush them.
Although gentle heckling is entirely acceptable.

More Time Together
Perhaps that's why a big house weekend can feel much longer than an ordinary weekend.
You're not constantly separating.
In hotels, everyone disappears into different bedrooms and meets again at breakfast. Restaurant tables split large groups into smaller conversations. Activities have start times, finishing times and bookings.
In a big holiday home, you're simply together.
You talk while making coffee.
You catch up while preparing dinner.
You sit in the garden long after everyone intended to go inside.
Children play with cousins they might only see a few times a year. Old friends pick up conversations as though they last saw each other yesterday. Grandparents get the rare pleasure of having everyone under one roof.
Those little in-between moments are often the ones people remember most.

And Then There's Sunday…
Sunday morning arrives, but somehow it doesn't feel quite as Sunday-ish.
There's another big breakfast.
Stories from Saturday night are discussed.
Photos are shared.
Someone inevitably asks, "When are we doing this again?"
Perhaps there's time for another walk, a leisurely coffee or simply sitting together before everyone starts heading home.
And yes, eventually the cars have to be packed.
But you leave feeling as though you've actually been away.
Not simply slept somewhere different for two nights.
Final lunch in the garden before heading home
Make Your Next Weekend Count
You don't always need a week away to properly recharge.
Sometimes you just need the right people, the right place and enough space to forget about normal life for a while.
